CURRY NIGHT 26th Feb.

Curry night at the Khyber is becoming an annual event and before I receive any complaints - the pictures and comments were supplied by Gordon.
Gordon has suggested that when the president starts to talk people seem to go to sleep or turn away - personally I think that's a bit
cruel.

Not a bit of curry left on Nick's plate - nothing unusual there then!

Nice picture of Pauline but would welcome comments about Roger. Can't work out whether it was taken before or after the event - I suppose the two bottles of beer is a bit of a clue.

Presentation on Tuesday 24th Feb

A grand total of £4000 handed over to a delighted representative from Family Care. All the money was raised from our 'Carols for Everyone' concert in December.

She is flanked by Barry, Mike and our esteemed president Paul, still doing a great impression as an ice cream salesman.

On the same night we had an informative and interesting talk from a guy from Water Aid (sorry - forgot to take his name).

The number of people in water stressed countries is projected to climb to 3 billion by 2025!!

The average European uses 200 litres of water every day - in developing countries the average is only 10 litres!!

Perfect day in Derbyshire

A small but select group had a great day in Derbyshire.
Fantastic weather - cold, crisp and dry
Great scenery - along the Derwent between Baslow and Calver and then onto Curbar and Baslow Edge.
Good exercise - 7 miles (should have been 6 but we had to avoid some vicious looking highland cattle)

A well earned rest on top of Curbar Edge - brilliant views but bitterly cold - if only Margaret would share the hot drink - Ian kept muttering something about 'Millstone'!!

Anne's sheltering from the icy blast but Mike is clearly keen to press on to reach Baslow before the coffee and cake shop closes.

Great day though and whetted the appetite for more challenges - 'onwards and upwards'.

Burns and Race Night

Another successful evening with well over a hundred people attending. Looks like we've raised over a thousand pounds for the Literacy Volunteers.
I think Gordon Green could do with some literacy coaching – hadn’t got a clue what he was talking about.

Can anyone interpret this?

The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o' need,
While thro' your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.

Although ‘hurdies’ are, apparently, ‘buttocks’ – I looked it up. Anybody know someone whose buttocks are like distant hills? Are we talking Cheviots or Cairngorms? Barry looks like he's staring at those distant hills and Tony looks like he's protecting his Hurdies!!

Master of Ceremonies, Tony, asking for the medics to escort the tall Scotsman with the ill-fitting wig, out of the hall.

Either that or he's checking on the gravy!

But he has absolutely no control of the horses as two are going the wrong way.

Never mind it's all in a good cause!!

From the outset I have to say that this is not going to be a formal or even an accurate record of our social and fund raising activities. As I have volunteered for this task I reserve the right to bend and exaggerate the truth, all in the cause of a good story.

The Club has been on the go since 1981 and as far I can ascertain there are few photos or written records of the many fund raising and social events which have taken place over those 28 years. There are of course plenty of dry financial statements which can be viewed by all but I hope that this blog reflects the other aspect of the club - drinking, socialising, banter and somewhere to go on alternate Tuesdays when the TV's rubbish.
The Blog starts tonight with our annual Burns and Race Night.
